About

Hi, I'm Renee

Hi, I'm Renee Hertenberger, a Registered Dietitian with a passion for integrative medicine and the powerful role food plays in overall health.

I believe nutrition is about more than what we eat—it's deeply connected to our emotions, behaviors, relationships, and identity. Food has the ability to bridge the physical and emotional aspects of life, connecting us to the social, psychological, and behavioral experiences that shape our daily lives. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where we can explore that connection together.

My approach is rooted in evidence-based practice and weight neutrality, combined with compassion and a genuine understanding of the real-life situations we navigate as humans. I work closely with my clients to ensure their goals are not only achievable, but sustainable long-term and beyond. Whether you're managing a chronic condition such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, or gastrointestinal disorders, or simply looking to feel more aligned with your health, I provide personalized strategies that fit seamlessly into your life.

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition and Foods and my Master's degree in Dietetics. While I'm currently based in Florida, I'm licensed to provide care in multiple states.

My goal is to help you build a healthier relationship with food and your body—one that supports your lifestyle, aligns with your goals, and allows you to fully engage in the life you want to live.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

What is MNT?

Medical Nutrition Therapy is a clinical approach to treating chronic conditions through individualized nutrition plans developed and monitored by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. It's not general wellness advice. MNT is an evidence-based medical intervention recognized by Medicare, most private insurers, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A 2025 position paper from the Academy reviewed 25 systematic reviews and confirmed that MNT significantly improves outcomes for patients with diabetes, obesity, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, heart disease, COPD, and more. In many cases, the clinical improvements from MNT match or exceed what medication alone can achieve.

The clinical process

MNT follows a structured four-step clinical model: nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, intervention, and ongoing monitoring. Your dietitian reviews your labs, medical history, medications, lifestyle, food access, and cultural preferences before building a plan.

This isn't a one-time visit. MNT is ongoing care, typically 3 to 6 sessions in the first year with continued follow-ups. Medicare currently covers 3 hours of MNT in year one and 2 hours each year after for qualifying conditions.

The evidence

For type 2 diabetes, MNT has been shown to reduce A1C by 0.5% to 2.0%, results comparable to adding a second medication. For heart disease, patients see total cholesterol reductions of up to 21 mg/dL, triglyceride drops of up to 33 mg/dL, and systolic blood pressure reductions of 5 to 9 mmHg.

For IBS, dietitian-led low-FODMAP protocols achieve meaningful symptom relief in 50% to 80% of patients. Across conditions, MNT saves an estimated $638 to $1,450 per patient annually through reduced medication use and fewer hospitalizations.

My Approach

Patient-centered and personalized care that fits your lifestyle

My approach to care is patient-centered and begins with a comprehensive assessment—looking beyond your health history to truly understand your daily routines, challenges, goals, and what you want to achieve.

In your first session, I'll introduce myself and ask thoughtful questions to get to know you—your lifestyle, your expectations, and what success looks like for you. This conversation helps me create an individualized plan of care that supports your needs and makes your goals not just realistic, but sustainable for life.

From there, we build a plan together. Not a generic meal plan, but a personalized roadmap that reflects your preferences, your schedule, your health conditions, and your real-life circumstances.

And we continue working together. With ongoing education, support, and accountability, we adjust your plan as needed and celebrate your progress along the way—helping you create lasting, meaningful change.

Every person I work with has a different story. My role is to understand yours and help you write the next chapter—one where food feels like a partner, not a problem.

Common Questions

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, Generational Nutrition operates as a private-pay practice, with plans to offer insurance coverage in the future.

Can I use my insurance benefits?

Depending on your plan, you may be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement. Upon request, a superbill can be provided for you to submit to your insurance provider.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed statement of services that includes the necessary information for potential reimbursement through your insurance. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to better understand your out-of-network benefits.

What are your rates?

Investment varies based on the service and level of support. Please inquire directly or visit our services page for a full overview of offerings.

Why don't you accept insurance yet?

We are currently in the process of becoming credentialed with insurance providers. Our intention is to expand access while maintaining the quality and personalization of care we provide.

Do you offer packages or ongoing support options?

Yes. We offer thoughtfully designed packages to support continuity of care that also include an initial personalized example meal plan, along with flexible options to meet individual needs.

What is the value of private-pay nutrition care?

Private-pay care allows for a highly personalized, relationship-centered approach—free from many of the limitations often imposed by insurance. This creates space for deeper support, flexibility, and truly individualized outcomes.
